Loans for the Local Economy
Caution: Burlington Bread has passed its use by date and should be handled with care.
The following information is for educational purposes only.
Burlington Currency Project is offering zero-interest loans of up to five thousand Burlington Bread Slices for any projects that will increase community wealth and the sustainability of Greater Burlington. The purpose is to diversify the local economy by increasing the range of goods and services available locally. Many of us try to buy locally but often find that something just isn’t made locally anymore. An independent, self-sustaining economy creates vibrant culture, jobs, self-reliance, and provides community security in a world where goods from far away use non-renewable natural resources in the production and transport and don’t hold the same standards of worker treatment that many of us desire.
Businesses, non-profits, co-operatives, and individuals or groups are all encouraged to apply.
The Burlington Currency Project encourages the creative use of Bread, and is especially interested in proposals that will widen and deepen our circulation network.
Burlington Bread can be used to:
- Create a website
- Hire graphic design services for brochures, business cards, etc.
- Hire a photographer
- Have your restaurant or café buy more local food
- Hire musicians for store openings or event
Hire an environmentally friendly cleaning service for your business
Applications should be received by December 31st, 2006, and a final decision on proposals will be made by January 30th, 2007.
Proposals for a loan as a portion of the financing for a larger project will also be considered. All the loans will be zero-interest, paid in Bread, and repayable on a negotiable schedule, in either Bread or US dollars.
There will be a small administration fee for issuing the loan. Terms of payment are negotiable and might include U.S. Dollars, Burlington Bread, or an in-kind donation. We’re looking to be as creative and flexible as possible!
The Burlington Currency Project believes that each local area can harness its own sufficient expertise, intelligence, willpower, commitment, and natural resources to overcome the troubles it faces and create the community it desires.
Is this an ongoing project, or a proposal for something new?
It was ongoing until it ended in 2007.
If the Bread being requested is only to be used as a subset of the project, please explain, and indicate what other sources of funding are being used.
Please provide a detailed budget of the anticipated Bread expenditures, listing specific businesses where Bread will be spent. This can include current Burlington Bread Members or individuals who are not members but with whom you are hoping to do business.
Please explain how you intend to repay the loan. What goods or services do you or will you offer for Burlington Bread?
